Our Soul Thirsts, and Our Flesh Longs for You (Poem)
May
O God, You are our God, with deepest longing we seek,
Our soul, our life, our very self, for You, our spirits speak,
Our flesh longs; it sighs for You in this dry and weary land,
We gaze in the eye of spirit to see Your power so grand.
Your lovingkindness better than life, a truth our hearts embrace,
Our lips shall praise Your holy name; in Your love, we find our place,
So we will bless You all our days, with hands uplifted high,
In Your name, our souls rejoice beneath Your endless sky.
On our beds, we remember You, in the quiet of the night,
We meditate, our thoughts on You until the morning light,
For You have been our help, O Lord, in shadows we find rest,
Beneath Your wings, protection sure, in joy we are blessed.
Our soul clings to You, O God, Your right-hand holds us tight,
Those who seek to harm our lives will vanish from our sight,
They descend to earth’s deep depths, their schemes will come to naught,
For in Your truth, in Your great love, our battles have been fought.
Given to the sword, they fall prey for foxes’ teeth,
But we will stand, rejoice in God, our hearts in You find peace,
Everyone who swears by Him will glory in His name,
For the mouths of those who spread deceit will be consumed by shame.
O God, You are our God, with deepest longing we seek,
Our soul, our life, our very self, for You, our spirits speak,
In Your love and faithfulness, our spirits are entwined,
In Your shadow, we find our joy in Your presence and peace of mind.
