The Balfour Declaration (Poem)

Zionism, a movement born in history’s light,
A homeland for Jews in Palestine’s sight.
The Balfour Declaration, in words so tight,
British support for this cause took its first flight.

Arthur Balfour wrote, in ink and pen,
To Rothschild, he penned the hopes of many men.
A homeland for the Jews, a vision then,
A chapter in history, where, and when.

The declaration’s echoes they still resound,
In the region’s strife, where tensions abound.
Arabs and Jews, on this sacred ground,
Caught in a struggle, profound and unbound.

Many felt betrayed, their dreams left unmet,
Hopes for self-government, a promise unkept.
Arab resentment, with fury and regret,
As violence surged, the stage was set.

In the wake of World War I, the years did unfold,
Palestine’s fate remained in limbo, untold.
The British Empire, with a hand to hold,
Paused, and the story of Palestine slowly rolled.

Then came World War II, the Holocaust’s pain,
A global cry, “Never again!” was the refrain.
Support for Zionism began to gain,
In 1948, Israel’s birth history’s new terrain.

But the problem persists; it won’t just fade,
Decades of conflict in the region cascade.
Two peoples’ stories, intricately laid,
A lasting challenge, by history, it’s made.

In the land of promise, both ancient and new,
The Balfour Declaration’s legacy is still in view.
The quest for peace and justice to pursue,
A shared future where dreams come true.
