Subjugate (Poem)

In the annals of history, a tale was unveiled:
As Columbus sailed, his course untraveled
To the Bahamas, he came, a new world to greet,
Where Arawak people and strangers did meet.

They traded their riches, in peace, they did stand;
With open hearts, they welcomed the land.
But a sword was displayed, and in ignorance’s snare,
They cut themselves, unaware of despair.

In the shadows, a plan was born that day:
To subjugate innocents to have it their way.
With fifty strong men, they sought to subdue
A people, unguarded, their freedom they’d undo.

Have you ever yearned to control another’s fate,
To make them obey, whether early or late?
It’s a mindset from Europe, a past long endured,
With kings and priests ruling and the masses obscured.

The Renaissance era, where power held sway,
Absolute dominion, no right to obey.
The quest for new lands, for conquest, and gold,
Ignored the cries of those in oppression’s hold.
But we won’t perpetuate hatred and blame;
instead, we’ll confront the past its dark claim.

To learn from our history, to heal and unite,
with love as our compass, we’ll walk toward the light.
For we’re all descendants of a complex design,
A history of subjugation, both yours and mine.
Let’s rise above with compassion in our embrace,
To build a world where equality finds its rightful place.
